Introduction:
This qualification is developed by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Edexcel Foundation (BTEC). The course is primarily aimed at people already working in a supervisory or management role within the construction industry. To achieve these qualifications, supervisors or managers have to provide satisfactory evidence of their management skills, as well as their technical knowledge and competence in the workplace and ability in supervising or managing a construction operation. The competences contained within the NVQ are at the core of CSCS registration. CSCS cards will ultimately be attained through achievement of the relevant NVQ.
Who the course is aimed at:
Suitable for both established construction project managers and those who are developing their abilities in this occupation, including mature students with no formal qualifications.
Course content:
NVQ Level 5 CPM – 11 units
Core Units:
- Manage Project Briefs
- Assess and manage project risks
- Establish and monitor project teams
- Control project cost, quality and progress
- Co-ordinate project handover and evaluation
Optional Units:
(Any three from the following six)
- Establish criteria for project briefs
- Evaluate and advise on development factors and potential design solutions
- Advise on and co-ordinate project design development
- Advise on and secure statutory consents
- Agree procurement and contract procedures
- Implement tenders and conclude contracts
(Any three from the following six) - Select personnel for activities
- Manage the performance of teams and individuals
- Enhance working relationships
- Advise on problems and solutions
- Chair and participate in meetings
- Develop self and others
Assessment:
During each unit of study you will be asked to produce evidence from the workplace that you are competent at undertaking various tasks. When the work is complete and assessed it will be filed in a portfolio of evidence.

Training method:
Formal lectures, discussions, practical exercises and an explanation of the evidence that will be required.
Course outcome/qualification:
NVQ Level 5 Construction Project Management.
Pre-requisite knowledge/qualification:
The course particularly suits mature students with no formal qualifications.
Recommended follow-up course:
NVQ Level 5 exempts the candidate from all CIOB examinations. Following achievement of an NVQ the candidate can undertake the CIOB Professional Interview to achieve full corporate membership.
